Deaf Mission
At
the Deaf Mission of First Baptist Church, we believe that deaf people can and should
be the leaders of their own church and church programs. For this reason, we have
separate worship services from the “hearing church.” These worship services are
led by the pastor to the Mission with messages relevant to everyday life. Our worship
is a celebration of faith with music and singing for the congregation and special
songs by the deaf choir. The mode of communication is sign language. Interpreters
are available to help hearing people understand what is being signed.
Our emphasis is on the study of God’s Word, so we have Christian LIFE (Learning
Is For Everyone) Hour classes taught by deaf people for deaf people of all ages.
We also have our annual Winter Bible Study and special Bible study events during
the year.
Events planned in the future for youth and children, as well as adults, include
retreats and camps at Eagle Eyrie Baptist Conference Center near Lynchburg, Vacation
Bible School, Christmas events, and other opportunities.
Those attending the Deaf Mission range from pre-lingual deaf to hard-of-hearing
to deaf/blind and hearing individuals.
We strive to be a mission minded fellowship both in support of the Cooperative
Program of our denomination and in our local mission activities.
Our church program includes Worship celebration, Christian LIFE Hour, Music program,
special events, outreach ministries, interpretation for the deaf/blind and hearing.
