Phil Mitchell has been First Baptist Church's Minister of Music since 2001.

Phil's principle responsibility is in worship planning and leadership, church wide concerts, and consistory roles as related to the overall music ministry and coordination with staff leadership.

Phil's major duties include:

  • Conduct Church Choir, One Accord, Youth Choir, Youth Ensemble
  • Plan weekly worship services
  • Serve as facilitator for worship team, music committee, flower committee, communion committee, ushers, and arts committee
  • Serve as staff liaison for the First Players drama ministry
  • Supervise professional music staff

He is a native of Nashville, TN. Phil holds a bachelor of music from Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn., and a master of church music degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. Prior to joining the FBC staff, Phil served Ardmore Baptist Church, Winston-Salem, NC; First Baptist Church, Bowling Green, KY; and Mountain Brook Baptist Church, Birmingham, AL.

Phil has numerous handbell, choral, and congregational compositions in print with various publishers. He has written devotional materials published by Smyth and Helwys. He recently authored, “100 Music Ministry Ideas” published by Hal Leonard Publications.

He and his wife, Libby, have two children: a daughter, Erin, and a son, Austin.
